The experiment that a scientist at the University of Chicago named Stanley Miller played over and over again in the laboratory more than half a century continues today explaining the possible origins of life on Earth.

Jeffrey Bada of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California at San Diego, and colleagues have reinterpreted the analysis of Miller to conclude that the major components of life could come from volcanic eruptions.

During these decades, several evidences have questioned the validity of the atmosphere recreated by Miller (there are doubts that it would be so reductive, ie oxygen-poor). However, the new experiment carried out by Bada suggests that "even if the overall atmosphere was not reducing, could have been a localized prebiotic synthesis" in volcanic systems, the study said.
