This must have thought when MEP Carlos Iturgaiz said yesterday that the ticket Brussels-Madrid had cost 200 euros more in economy class to first class.

Such statements I have heard this afternoon's business. And I had to find the story in Google because he thought he had heard wrong or had taken any psychoactive substance unknowingly.

The issue of information literacy has become a key issue in the library environment, an issue which they have devoted numerous articles, papers and presentations at conferences and seminars, both a practical and theoretical.

Specifically, university libraries have many years working on this issue and trying to improve information skills of university students.

To what extent this work is having an impact on capabilities of university students, it is almost essential to know how users assess their own knowledge and skills in search, collection, analysis and systematization of information. This is dedicated an interesting study by Psychology researchers at the Education and Library Services University of the Balearic Islands, which appeared in the English Journal of Scientific Documentation.

First, we talk about the five types of literacies to work effectively in the world of ICT:

1. Technology Literacy (merely instrumental)
2. Information Literacy (mentioned above)
3. media Creativity: Ability to develop and distribute content.
4. Global Literacy: ability to understand the interdependence between actors, technology and content.
5. responsible Literacy: ability to properly consider the consequences of the media.

I refer to these terms because we can consider this classification useful. This study deals with the second type mentioned.

The following is a brief review of the previous literature on the subject and then discusses the technical issues of statistical analysis.

Now we enter into the results, which are noteworthy are the following, many of them quite surprising at first sight, even after the findings show that these surprises have their justification:

• Students perform a self-assessment survey of their knowledge to find general information and academic information on the Internet much more positive than when referring to the use of libraries for the same purpose.
• College students show a poorer perception of their ability to find academic information in libraries that female college students.
• positive self-perception regarding their abilities to gather information in libraries improvement course to course.
• Students of Humanities is by far the most positive that values \u200b\u200btheir expertise in the use of libraries documented. At the opposite pole are the students of Social Sciences and Law.
• UIB Students used the Internet to document much more for academic libraries and the library service in general.
• The frequency of use of the library as a source of documentation academic is higher in the higher grades.
• 70% of Humanities students are frequent. In contrast, almost 80% of students in Social Sciences and Law say they do not normally use library services.

After capturing these and other findings, the study reached the following conclusions:

• The university students have a better self to their level of competence in the use of Internet. This is consistent with other research as developed by EDUCAUSE Overall Study in the U.S..
• The university students with good self-concept when using the services for academic librarians is that of a student of final year students enrolled in a career field of Humanities.
• While university students with a positive self-concept regarding the use of Internet is that of a student's third year of a career in the field of Social Sciences and Law.
• Several studies in very different latitudes show that Internet is the preferred resource for college students to find academic information.
• Profile frequent user of libraries and library catalog is that of a student in their final years a career of Humanities.
• The university students have difficulty distinguishing between electronic resources provided by the library and are accessible via the Internet, open-access resources on the Web
• In general, it makes extensive use of ICT as a documentary source, while using an almost marginal library services.

This suggests that the so-called "digital natives" for the simple fact of being, have a good informational training. And it makes the authors conclude that requires the creation and consolidation of the CRAI (Centers Learning and Research) to attract users to improve their libraries and information capabilities , so they can extract the most out of their university education.

Years ago we heard that it is essential to the production model change in our country. Before, during and after the crisis. We are hoping to start that change, but politicians on one side and another, from near and far, projects are scored successes do not know. This is the feeling that most s WE ARE have. For nothing.

To change this state of things, the mainstay is the research and investment in R + D + I. But now when most needed, cutbacks in R & D & I have been intensified, as indicated Joan Guinovart, President of the Confederation Scientific Association of Spain (COSCE), in "On the Shoulders of Giants", the popular science program, RNE. Specifically, the budget for R + D + I for 2011 has been reduced by 7.38%, the there is added the effect of inflation, which leaves a 10% drop. Just when the Government tells us that innovation is going to be what we make out with more strength and speed of the current economic crisis. Nonsense impossible to understand.

This budget reduction is what is prompting many brilliant English researchers are leaving the country have been trained to go abroad because Spain can not offer a solution for the future, beyond a scholarship after another (at best) and planted with forty-odd years without any insurance.

This disturbing and alarming situation was also discussed last week in "On the Shoulders of Giants" by three researchers English. The discussion covered several important topics:

-Lack of investment in R + D + I, both state and, above all, by private companies (which recorded the lowest rates European Union).

-The low recognition received a doctorate degree in Spain.

-that the English investigators, if they stay in our country, only aspire to be university professor or researcher at the CSIC, and is not seen as a professional private enterprise creation.

-The low valuation that society has of science, reflected in declining university enrollments in Science.

This shows a very precarious situation of science and, in general, of our country. Which should make us think about what you are doing and change course to be given.

From libraries, to the extent that we can (Through activities and through partnerships with institutions and scientific associations) we must try to promote scientific thinking and the work of science. From libraries, as traditional repositories of human knowledge, it has to defend science, as opposed to frivolous and disturbingly unscientific air from many media.

New File Rodríguez-CSIC Castilian joins

The personal file of Mr. Lorenzo Rodríguez Castilian joins Tomás Navarro Tomás library thanks to the donation made by their daughters. Working papers, sound recordings, photographs and correspondence with a large number of linguists and intellectuals of the time contribute to more precise information about the studies in the Center for Historical Studies and in particular those related to ALPI , Linguistic Atlas of the Iberian Peninsula that become the subject of scientific research in the intramural project led by Ms. Pilar García Mouton and developed in the CCHS.

This collection will be processed by the archive department of the library and its description is incorporated as soon as possible, the catalog file of CSIC.

On Friday March 4 has joined the English Museum catalog, BIMUS, the set of records describing the bibliographic collection that CSIC has placed in the National Archaeological Museum (MAN) under different cooperation agreements, for more than fifty years between the two institutions. This process allows unified access to the library collection that offers the MAN though some of the specimens to a deposit of CSIC.
BIMUS The catalog now has 7,888 new records and with 10,861 copies from the collection of prehistoric CSIC. A specialist in this field can find in a single search documents offers the library of the National Archaeological Museum. The catalog of CSIC keep the description of these individuals but refer to the MAN for consultation. At computer
specimens from the collection CSIC are identified in a field of exemplary record for easy retrieval.
