Simurg

Madrid, February 22, 2011

Over successive strategic plans, Library Coordination Unit has been promoting a policy of scanning for the dissemination and valorisation of the heritage kept in the CSIC Library Network.

For nearly two years, the Library Coordination Unit has been articulated through a step by step documentary corpus, a scanning policy that seeks to ensure the sustainability and interoperability of the project through and through the use of common criteria, standards use bound forms, etc.

Thanks to the work done, not only for this unit, but also by pioneer library digitization projects have been developed in line with these criteria and guidelines, the Library Network has formed a collection of that amount already digitized a significant volume.

Therefore and because we want our collection will fly, we have given a name as well as being sufficiently identified, hopefully to everyone's liking.

Thus was born "simurg, CSIC digitized."
The name comes from Persian mythology. Simurg is the name of the immortal bird that according to this mythology nests in the branches of science. We felt that this name was well-suited to represent and name something that is preserved in the enormous scientific branches that make up the Network of CSIC Libraries and somehow flies through the web at different places and users to broadcast a part of scientific knowledge.

Simurg The collection consists of today, more than 20 digitization projects with a total of about 1 million and master images (700,000 images only in the library catalog and more than 200,000 files).

hope this number continues to grow because we have many ideas and improvements we want to serve this collection come to become one of the best collections of ancient background in science. Thanks
