Today I bring you an interesting and innovative proposal for the Drexel University (Pennsylvania, United States) that the trend is increasingly necessary to be close to the needs of users, while more visible the work of the libraries (but not least).
The "Personal Librarian Program" Drexel University librarian assigned to each of the 2750 freshmen. Before you start the course, librarians are placed in contact with students via email mail. Then, meet in person with them and offer them a crash course in library supply. And your support will last for an entire semester, which will encourage them to use library resources and help them to use.
Librarians have a role similar to that of Personal Trainers. And this support is shown essential because, as stated by Danuta A. Nitecki (dean of libraries at Drexel University), the biggest problem students have is how to use search engines, but what you want to find. "Often they do not know what you are looking for," Case Ms. Nitecki.
This program at Drexel University is to redefine the role of the library. And also to get students to interact with librarians, emphasize and reinforce their role as educators.
As Ms. Nitecki said, this initiative is to ensure that libraries more comfortable and attractive.
In fact, the Personal Librarian Program has already attracted interest from many other college and university libraries.
no doubt an effort may seem almost pharaonic for many universities, but it is a possibility of changing the view on the libraries of our users. Change for the better. The effort may require many hours of planning and preparation of materials, other than customer service hours. But certainly worth the effort. I hope it sets an example.
