Part of the Universal Decimal Classification or UDC. Long neglected, mainly because it is considered by many as a rigid structure with a very flexible syntax, or because it is a customer-unfriendly the biblitotecas. Gradually, they take territory interest groups or other organizational systems more understandable by users. However, the CDU is still there, present mainly in public libraries.
Dewey Classification, analog of the CDU, was invented earlier. Been with us no more and no less than in 1876. Despite all the criticism it has received all its limitations, I always thought it was a wonderful wit, a few numbers that are able to summarize all human knowledge.
Most surprising is that this conclusion has come Phil Shapiro (PC World writer, educator and activist of access to technology). Cree would have to create a DDC encoding for Internet content. And consider that the appropriate entities to create the coding, in a participatory way, would the Wikimedia Foundation, American Library Association and the Internet Archive. And the Gates Foundation would provide funding for the project.
Interestingly, this idea came up to Phil Shapiro when he observed a librarian I had memorized the Dewey Decimal Classification and indicated to users exactly where to locate the materials they wanted.
Can you imagine something similar on the Internet? Of course, it is clear that, despite all the advances in semantic relations of terms, the ability to promptly and organizational systems offer unmatched number still appears. The truth is that to extrapolate a system similar to Dewey to the Internet is a very attractive idea. I just do not see it, it seems too complicated, and do not know if practical.
